For this project, I had the oportunity to solve a problem that was very close to me. I play Dungeons and Dragons every week with my friends. It's a tradition we've been keeping up for about a year now, and it's a great excuse to spend time together, and put aside and stress we're dealing with for a few hours.
Dungeons and Dragons is a hard game for beginners. There's a lot of information to remember, and very few tools to aid you. Playing a magical character is especially diffictult. Every player gets a character sheet onto which you can choose and write down spells, amongst other things. Knowing which ones you can/should pick requires significant knowledge of the game. Recalling each spell's effect during the game is an even greater challenge. The goal was to make a tool to make this process a little less daunting.
To gain some insight on the current tools that dnd players perfer, I made a survey and posted it around my univerity. The survey resulted in over 50 responses from players with varying comfort levels in the game. 5e tools was, by far, the most feature rich website, and was most popular with advanced players. D&D Beyond is the official site for the for game, and was most popular with beginners.
The goal was to create a website with layered complexity. Beginners could have their spells chosen for them, while allowing for customization as a user became more comfortable. The website would automatically filter their choices in accordance with the rules of the game. At the end, the site would generate a printable spell book which the user could reference during their own games.
dnd casts a wide net. The design of the site should be accessible and appealing to all age and comfort ranges. this largely influenced the structure of the site.To make the complex process of character creation more accessible, it was important to break the process into digestible chunks, and avoid overwhelming the user visually. We settled on a quiz structure.
The final design was minimalistic to appeal to all age ranges, and
